- When did the First World War begin and end? Why was there so much fighting around Ypres?
- What was the Ypres Salient? Mark Ypres, Passchendaele and Messines on a map.
- Who was John McCrae and what did he write?
- Choose one soldier from your own town or region who is commemorated in Flanders and find out his story.
On location: activities
- At Tyne Cot, find the grave of a soldier who was about your age. Write down his name, age and regiment.
- Look at the names on the Menin Gate. Why are they here and not in a cemetery?
- Compare a Commonwealth and a German cemetery. What differences do you notice?
- Listen to the Last Post. Describe in three words how you felt.
After the trip: looking back
- Which moment of the trip stays with you most? Why?
- Why does remembrance still matter today?
- Write a short letter to a soldier whose grave you saw.
