Short answer
For Erasmus+ travel costs, the programme does not reimburse actual expenses but pays a fixed amount per participant based on distance. You calculate the distance with the European Commission’s official distance calculator. Participants who travel green, by train, bus or car-sharing, usually receive a higher travel amount and more funded travel days. On top of that, there is a daily amount for subsistence.
How does travel support work?
- A fixed amount per participant, based on the distance between the place of origin and the venue, not on the actual cost of the trip.
- One-way distance. You calculate the one-way distance; the amount covers the return journey.
- Official calculator. The distance must be calculated with the European Commission distance calculator.
- Distance bands. Each distance falls into a band with its own amount:
| Distance band |
|---|
| 10 – 99 km |
| 100 – 499 km |
| 500 – 1,999 km |
| 2,000 – 2,999 km |
| 3,000 – 3,999 km |
| 4,000 – 7,999 km |
| 8,000 km or more |
The amounts per band are listed in the Programme Guide and the rates annex of the grant agreement. We deliberately do not list them here, as they can change from one call to the next.
Green travel: extra support
- What counts as green travel? A journey where most of the distance, outbound and return, is covered by sustainable means such as train, bus or car-sharing.
- What does it give you? Usually a higher travel amount and more travel days funded by individual support, as green travel often takes longer.
- Keep proof. Keep tickets and receipts for your project file.
Subsistence and other costs
- Individual support: a daily amount for accommodation, meals and local transport, depending on the destination country.
- Organisational support: an amount per participant for preparation and follow-up by the school.
- Inclusion support and exceptional costs: extra support for participants with fewer opportunities or for particularly expensive travel, under conditions.
Examples: which band applies?
A few indicative examples. Always calculate the distance for your own project with the official calculator.
| Belgian city | Destination | Distance (one way) | Distance band |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ghent | Paris | about 250 km | 100 – 499 km |
| Brussels | Berlin | about 650 km | 500 – 1,999 km |
| Antwerp | Helsinki | about 1,600 km | 500 – 1,999 km |
| Liège | Athens | about 2,000 km | borderline: check with the calculator |
What Feriados does
We book transport and accommodation for your mobility, compare green options with flights in every proposal, and provide the invoices and travel documents you need for your project file. The application, grant and reporting remain the school’s responsibility.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Erasmus+ travel amount cover the whole journey?
Not always. It is a fixed amount based on distance. If the actual journey costs more or less, the amount stays the same. Good planning and booking early help you stay within budget.
Does coach travel count as green travel?
Yes, coach travel is considered sustainable. What matters is that most of the journey, outbound and return, is sustainable. Check the exact conditions in the Programme Guide.
