Before departure: find out

  1. When did the First World War begin and end? Why was there so much fighting around Ypres?
  2. What was the Ypres Salient? Mark Ypres, Passchendaele and Messines on a map.
  3. Who was John McCrae and what did he write?
  4. Choose one soldier from your own town or region who is commemorated in Flanders and find out his story.

On location: activities

  1. At Tyne Cot, find the grave of a soldier who was about your age. Write down his name, age and regiment.
  2. Look at the names on the Menin Gate. Why are they here and not in a cemetery?
  3. Compare a Commonwealth and a German cemetery. What differences do you notice?
  4. Listen to the Last Post. Describe in three words how you felt.

After the trip: looking back

  1. Which moment of the trip stays with you most? Why?
  2. Why does remembrance still matter today?
  3. Write a short letter to a soldier whose grave you saw.
